Magento 2.1.3 :: New Improvements and Features Added

Magento announced their latest release on Wednesday which contains over 90 bug fixes and some solid feature updates. You can view the detailedrelease notes here or continue reading to get a summary of some of the additions we’re excited to see included.

Performance Updates

Magento 2 is a huge step forward from Magento 1 in terms of performance, but 2.1.3 brings even more speed updates. The Magento team have been working to refactor some of the heavy queries used on the frontend of the store in order to streamline performance, along with making changes to the way the indexing process works to make it faster and more stable.

Developers will be happy to see that Magento have improved the speed of static asset deployment, which previously was a bug bear for many developers. More information on this can be found by visiting the ‘deploy static view files‘ section of Magento configuration guide.

PayPal & BrainTree

It’s now faster than ever for customers to place repeat orders on your website. The new feature allows customers to store their PayPal and BrainTree details for your store, meaning that they won’t have to remember their payment details the next time they shop with you.

In addition to this, there are various updates to how merchants company names are displayed on customers statements, a few improvements around fraud scoring, an improved UI in the payments section of the Magento admin panel and plenty of bug fixes to help keep your store stable.

New API Endpoints

At Magento Imagine 2016, Alan Kent mentioned that the Magento team were working hard to make sure Magento 2’s API was extensive. The 2.1.3 release includes two new API endpoints which allows developers to process refunds from orders and invoices.

Bug Fixes

There are over 90 bug fixes included in the new Magento 2.1.3 release, which are listed in more detail within the release notes. Some of our favourites however are as follows:

  • Magento Imports / Exports –You can now import and export CSVs which contain special characters. There are also various bug fixes which have been applied to make the import and export process much more stable.
  • Improved Admin – There are various updates within the Magento admin which improve the user interface along with performance improvements when working with products that contain a large number of configurable SKUs.
  • Cart and Checkout – There are 13 functional fixes applied within the 2.1.3 release for the cart and checkout. One bug we’ve seen pop up on previous installs are issues surrounding the mini-cart not always updating correctly, which has now been resolved.

In addition to the above, there are numerous bug fixes around working with catalog management (configurable products, images), store emails, gift cards, order processing and common issues around Magento throwing exceptions under certain circumstances thus making the Magento admin panel much more stable for administrative users.

Overall, this is a big step forward for Magento 2 with this release focusing on making the platform more stable, faster and introducing a few small features for merchants to enjoy!
